Those who believe in romantic marriage will often criticize pragmatic marriage, saying that it is oppressive, inhuman, unfair, immoral, and an affront to personal freedom. However, it is not. Within cultures that have adopted more pragmatic marriages, the successful rate is very high indeed. Nearly all couples learn to love and care for each other very deeply. It is just that the long – term happiness and stability is given more importance than the short – term.
Pragmatic marriage is a marriage that is made possible by formal procedures of family or group politics. A responsible authority sets up or encourages the marriage. Arranged marriage is a form of pragmatic marriage. Once declared, an engagement is implicit, which follows through with a formal marriage ceremony.
